Flight
Club is one of our Wednesday classes where the kids get together
each week and build something new that takes flight. Over
the 6 weeks we have scheduled the kids will build paper airplanes,
air powered (blow through a straw) paper rockets, balsa wood
airplanes, foam air planes and kites. The last week the kids
get to choose from the previous classes to decide what they liked
best and we build that!
I never
got pictures from the paper airplane day, but here the kids are
working on their balsa gliders. They also built rubber band
powered planes this day
Harder
than heck trying to take indoor pictures of moving objects...
They tried
several launching techniques as well as different wing positions
to see how the planes would react. It was a great learning
experience and the kids had a ball!
A good
toss and a lucky shot from my camera!
A 4 way
airplane toss! If you look close, I got all 4 planes in the
air!
On to foam
Space Shuttles! The nice thing about these (and the balsa
planes) is that we get to spend more time flying than building,
which is what the kids really want anyway :)
Creativity
comes in to play when I explain to the kids that they don't have
to match the kit picture when putting on the decals.
"Do whatever you want" I encouraged them.
Never
getting into any of the shots I brought my camera remote control
today and snuck over while they were working.
It took a
bit of a knack to get these to fly by tossing them. After a
few attempts they started using the catapult launcher that comes
with the kit.
Much
faster and acrobatic with the catapult launcher!
4 of the
kids pose for a pre-launch photo
And away
they go! What a hoot!
More
aerial fun
Shuttles
EVERYWHERE!
This week
(the last week) was kites. We had to fly in the large
parking lot as the football team was using the field. The
kids had a ball and said the kites were the best part of the
class.
This boy
had a problem getting good lift till I directed him to move away
from the building. One boy got his kite up well over 100
feet and was thrilled! Wouldn't you know it, my camera
batteries died after this picture... bummer!
That's
it for Flight Club! Hopefully we will have as much fun the
next time we offer this class (most likely in the Spring)
